A Virtual Welcome to Synod

Zion, founded on the mountains!
God, thy Maker, loves thee well.
He has chosen thee, most precious,
He delights in thee to dwell.
God’s own city—who can all thy glory tell?
God’s own city!—who can all thy glory tell?

–from Psalm 87 (Psalter Hymnal 166)

Delegates are arriving, volunteers are bustling, a beautiful college campus is alive with activity.  The eighth synod of the United Reformed Churches in North America is in the process of assembling on the scenic grounds of Nyack College in Nyack, New York!  It’s my great privilege and joy to serve as a volunteer and musician at this much-anticipated meeting.  So far it’s been a terrific day, and I expect that most of the week will be just as exciting.

I shared the ride with three other volunteers from West Sayville; we left about a quarter to six in the morning, enjoyed breakfast at a nearby diner, and arrived at the college right on schedule at ten o’clock.  The rest of the morning was spent getting organized and setting up registration.  I met each of the pleasant members of Pompton Plains Reformed Bible Church’s Synodical Planning Committee, including their tireless chairman, Dr. Tony van Grouw.  This synod meeting could not be a success without him—or any of the other volunteers who have selflessly shared their time for the benefit of the delegates.

I spent the past two hours in a grueling but fun practice session with two other musicians (an organist and a trumpeter) who will be accompanying the singing of the delegates at the prayer service tonight at 7:30.  The acoustics are amazing!  If you’ll be visiting, I hope to see you there!

One of the most beautiful aspects of Nyack College is its position overlooking the Hudson River and the Tappan Zee Bridge.  For now, I’ll leave you with some recent pictures of the scenery.  But keep close to URC Psalmody for more synod-related news and discussion!

When the Lord shall count the nations,
Sons and daughters He shall see,
Born to endless life in Zion;
And their joyful song shall be:
“Blessed Zion—all our fountains are in thee;
Blessed Zion!—all our fountains are in thee!”
